How to improve and manage the fuel consumption of your fleet

Article provided by Netstar

During 2020 businesses have come to realise that it is now more important than ever to ensure that a fleet runs as optimally as possible. However, when it comes to fuel management, many businesses find it challenging to find ways to help manage and even improve fleet consumption, which is why we’ve put together a few tips that can help you make the most of every tank.

General maintenance

This might seem like a no-brainer, but not all fleets are managed optimally with respect to maintenance. Most maintenance activities happen at set times throughout the year instead of being seen as an ongoing process. Even small problems that are not picked up timeously can have a large impact on your fuel cost if left untreated in the long term.

For example, if tyres are not inflated properly, which is something that can easily occur between trips, fuel consumption will be affected. Most indications show that for every one PSI a tyre is inflated below recommended pressure, fuel efficiency is negatively impacted by 0.2%, and while that number seems small, it all adds up!

The right vehicle for the job

Just like continuous maintenance, there has been various instances of fleet vehicles being used for jobs that could easily have been handled by a smaller, and thus more fuel-efficient vehicle.

More often than not these problems crop up due to scheduling errors that result in certain vehicles being unavailable for jobs that have tight deadlines. This means efficient scheduling and planning will help ensure that the right type of vehicle is being used for the right purpose, saving you money on fuel consumption in the long run.

Driver behaviour (driving style and speed)

Most fleet managers know that apart from the vehicle, the other half of the fuel efficiency equation is driver behaviour. One of the best ways to ensure that driver safety and transit efficiency is being maintained, is by getting up to date information on the driving style and speed of fleet vehicles. Reckless driving and speeding can have a major impact on the profitability of fleet projects, as well as long term effects on driver health and fleet optimality. Netstar provides real-time driving telematics, or in-cab views of journeys that can help you save cost over time.
