4 key small business marketing statistics for 2021

2021 has been a rollercoaster of a year, but let’s look at four key small business marketing statistics for the world and South Africa. These stats highlight areas where small businesses can focus their marketing in the hope of building a larger customer base and increasing the chances of positive word-of-mouth advertising.

A great customer experience is essential

According to Salesforce’s State of the Connected Customer study, 80 per cent of customers worldwide put as much emphasis on their customer experience as the quality of the product. Furthermore, 53% of consumers create an emotional link with the brands they buy the most from. Considering these stats, it becomes essential to ensure you have a good retention marketing strategy in place to make your regular customers feel loved.

Another statistic from the Salesforce report which may help you to rise above the rest is being personal and empathic with your customers. 68% of consumers expect brands to show empathy and 66% expect them to understand the unique needs of the consumer. In reality, only 37% or less of consumers believe that brands show empathy and treat consumers as individuals.

Responsive websites are key

According to a report on digital media in South Africa by wearesocial and Hootsuite, 98% of internet users (16 years old – 64 years old) having a smartphone and 43.2% using tablet devices. This indicates that when you design your website you need to ensure that it is responsive to the different screen sizes it could potentially be viewed on.

Voice search is on the rise

Further in the wearesocial and Hootsuite report, it states that 38.2% of internet users adopting voice search when looking for information on the internet. With smart home growth up by 15.4% in January 2021, it seems adapting websites for voice search will be a good idea going forward.

E-commerce is booming

65.3% of internet users utilise a shopping app to make purchases.

90.2% look online for a service or product to buy.

89.3% visited a retail store or site online.

65.3 % used a shopping app on their mobile phone or tablet device. With 57.7% of online shoppers using any device to buy a product online, only 38.9% used a mobile device to purchase a product. (Wearesocial & Hootsuite)

These stats continue to confirm the fact that businesses need to have an online presence to interact with their potential and current customers.

These are four areas that can help to boost small businesses into the future by paying a little attention to their digital and customer experience strategies.
