8 best practices for online presentations

Sitting in front of your screen, your palms are sweaty and you wonder how many people will remain riveted during your presentation. Here are eight best practices to keep the attention of your viewers.

1. Warm up your voice

Your voice is your key tool when doing online presentations and having a clear voice when speaking will help to keep the attention of your guests. You should do voice exercises to warm up your voice before each presentation.

2. Check your tech

Ensure you understand how the tech works which you will use to host your presentation. You should do a dry run with colleagues or family members to ensure you know what to do if there is a hiccup. Another item to consider is sharing your presentation with a colleague who will be on the call so that they can upload the content for you if something go wrongs on your side and you are unable to show the presentation anymore.

3. Be presentable

Even if you are presenting from home it is critical to be professional. Ensure you have dressed appropriately for your audience. Look behind you and check that your background is clear, not distracting and helps to establish your brand. Try to have your camera or laptop at eye level when you are standing, as this can help you when you present. If you do present sitting down, then make sure you are positioned away from the camera so that people can see you from your elbows up.

4. Show your face

In a study by Richard Fantz, it was revealed that toddlers stared longer at a human face than at a bull’s eye. We can therefore say the fascination with a human’s face is hardwired into us. People like to see what others look like. If you are camera shy, then make sure there is a photo of yourself in your presentation at the beginning and end. Another encouragement to step in front of the camera is because 90% of communication is given through non-verbal cues and if your camera is off, you lose a lot of these cues.

5. Keep your slides short

People access presentations through a variety of devices which means that their screen size will differ. If you have a lot of text on your slides it could be hard for people on small screens to read it. Therefore ensure you only have information on the slides which add to your presentation. You should also use images that help to drive home the key points in your presentation. Use notes to help you keep on track with what you want to share during your presentation.

6. Have a moderator

Interacting with the people in your online presentation is important but checking the chat every five minutes could cause a distraction. Therefore it is important to have someone who can deal with the admin of the presentation like answer simple questions in the chat or help people who might be experiencing technical problems in your presentation.  If you ask questions in your presentation then you should take some time to read the chat to see what everyone is saying. In addition, you could read some of the comments out and talk about them.

7. Respect your audience

You must make sure you start and end your presentation on time. This will show that you respect your audience and the time they have dedicated to the presentation.

8. Plan your interactions

People like to interact with one another. You can ask questions and have your audience type their answer in the chat pod of your meeting room or you could use a polling app to add a bit of pizzazz to your event. Remember to space your interactions out evenly throughout your presentation. Every 10 minutes is a good timeframe to aim for.
