Do you know the true cost of distraction in your workspace? Are distractions hindering you from achieving your ultimate goals? According to a study done distractions can ultimately take away more time than we first imagined. In the study they say that even if you just spend 30 seconds checking social media, your overall time spent on the distraction will be 25 minutes and 30 seconds because it takes your brain at least 25 minutes to become refocused on your task.
Now that we are aware of the valuable time lost to distractions what can we do to stop them? Here are six keys to creating a distraction-free workspace.
Examine your work desk
Look at your work desk and remove everything from it that will not add value to your work. If you have cute toys or Rubik’s cube remove it from your desk as these can become unwanted distractions when your mind wonders. By decluttering your desk, you will be able to find the information you need quickly on your desk and save time.
Limit your tech distractions
If you don’t need the internet to do your job, then disconnect from it while you work. If you use the internet, then create a work-based browser where you only have the relevant links for your work on that browser. This will prevent you from quickly checking your twitter account. Another way people try to prevent themselves from accessing websites which distract them is by loading an app. One of the best ones is FocusMe. This app prevents you from access certain apps and websites when you have decided to work. It helps you to remain focused on the task at hand.
Create sounds
Some people are able to focus better when they are surround by sound. Just be careful what type of music you listen to. Don’t play anything with a catchy tune, or lyrics which entice you to sing along. The music should blend into the background while you work. For those who don’t like music there are some apps which give you white noise to work to.
Take breaks
Even though working hard is important, taking breaks is just as important. These breaks should involve you getting up from your desk and moving around. You could go for a walk, or grab a glass of water or read a bit of a book or listen to your favourite songs. In these breaks you should relax. Don’t do anything which is related to work or stress-inducing. After the break, you will be refreshed to tackle your work again.
Come to your desk prepared
When you settle down to work, ensure you have everything you need to get the job done. If you need pens and paper bring them. If you need some snacks and water get it. But when you sit down to work ensure that you will not need to get up until your next break. By getting up to do something you will break your concentration and be easily led to distraction.
Create a handwritten list
This helps you to declutter your mind. When you write things down on a list you will consider their importance. When you tick them of your list during the day; you will be satisfied with your accomplishments. This is better than a typed out list as your mind will organize things while you write.
By considering these six keys you would be well on your way to a distraction-free workspace.
