Learn to dream

Article written by Nigel Wilkes (ActionCOACH Business Coach, Centurion)

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”
This oft-cited but not-quite-accurate quote is from Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale, Alice in Wonderland. In Carroll’s altered reality, the conversation between the disoriented Alice and the mysterious Cheshire Cat actually went like this:

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where,” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat. “- so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”

Many people are lost. Parents and society, in general, seem to have an expectation that you should have your whole life mapped out before you by the time you are seventeen. Career, marriage, retirement.

What self-respecting teenager really has a clue of these things at such a young age? The issue is that you learn what you want, and – more importantly – what you don’t want, as you navigate the journey of life. The starting point for me is actually learning to dream. Don’t be a slave to a closed mindset. If you can teach yourself to dream, then you can follow the steps to make those dreams a reality.

How often do you meet an educator who will teach you this skill? In fact, dreaming would probably be regarded as something intangible – an unrealistic fantasy. However, without it where are you going to go? “Somewhere?”

One just has to read the statistics of how often people under 30 years of age change jobs, and even careers. It is quite frightening. What does it tell us? That employers are slave drivers and pay so little that employees are forced to move? The biggest driver for change is money (increased salary) and no surprise there. But why do people want more money? In most cases this is a carrot on a stick, but will it ever deliver what one seeks?

I had dreams when I was a kid, and still do, but then I still think that I am a kid. However, if someone had taught me the simple ActionCOACH Formula to Success I might, and I stress ‘might’, have seen more of these dreams come to fruition. Remember this formula:

Dream x Goal x Learn x Plan x Action = Success

Everything starts with the dream, but it will remain just a dream if you don’t follow the next steps. Need help turning your business dreams into reality? Book a Complimentary Coaching Session with your nearest coach.
