Meet the Absa Small Business Friday featured Small Business of the week – Moody and Smith Digital.
Moody and Smith Digital (Pty) Ltd is a digital agency which aims to help businesses have a solid presence online by implementing the following four core activities: digital marketing, content creation, online community management, and systems optimisation.
Moody and Smith Digital was started in 2013 with one employee and R800 in Midrand. Through risk-taking, perseverance and grit, Tumelontle Mokoka has grown his business to 40+ diverse individuals in the richest square mile in Africa being the heart of Sandton with a revenue close to 20 million in 2021.
A few of their many great business success stories occurred during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of their major clients was on the brink of closing when they stepped in and helped the business to be profitable again. They created and implemented a digital marketing strategy for their client, so robust that they grew the client’s overall online audience from approximately 300 000 people to more than 1 million in 12 months. This achievement helped them receive an award from Facebook for being one of the few pages in South Africa with over 1 million followers.
One of the biggest challenges Tumelontle Mokoka has faced is finding his tribe to help cultivate the niche they work in. He explains, “Talent is easy to find, but talent is not enough. What are the soft skills of the talent? Work ethic, persuasion, dedication, and good people skills are as important as the hard skills of an individual”.
Through many years of going through his network with a fine-tooth comb, Tumelontle has created the best team to back his dream. He has learnt that valued employees are the most productive and being known as a company that values its employees attracts highly qualified talent and potential new clients who want to support a company with a good brand reputation.
Moody and Smith Digital’s long-term goal was to have an international footprint, and this has happened by partnering with an Australian digital company. The next area of expansion is into West Africa, where they are busy finalising a partnership with an events company in Cameroon. Moody and Smith Digital to continues to solidify their place in the South African market and become a key player in the digital industry.
They are also in the process of being SETA accredited, which will enable them to offer learnerships to teach skills in the creative space such as videography and editing, copywriting, photography, motion graphics, digital marketing and SEO optimisation.
Moody and Smith Digital was chosen to receive a Top 20 Award at the South African Small Business Awards.
